Creative Footsteps

This project encouraged local residents, visitors to the area and tourists to use the Wessex Ridgeway Trail using an arts project as the catalyst. The project used a writer in residence to work with communities, which explored the Wessex Ridgeway with the aim of urging participants to write about the geology, history, flora and fauna of the route. The resident poet was commissioned to write poems using the words of the communities, relating to specific sites along the 72 mile route. Parts of these poems were then carved or inscribed into specially commissioned sculpture sited at various intervals along the way. A photographer captured images of the commissioned sculpture on the Ridgeway, and the poems and photographs formed the basis of a touring exhibition.

"This exhibition and the sculptures en route add so much to the trail – all routes should do this!" John Rose, Crawley, Sussex
